Sometimes playing by the rules is the worst thing you can do. Kids games really should be fun for the adult and fun+educational for the kid. However, all too often, the game ends up playing itself (Candyland) or being only a matter of the luck of the die/spinner (Chutes+Ladders). Plus they often drag on way past the attention span of the typical 2-5 year old (which is way-way past the boredom point of the typical 25 year old).
